Boyfriend, known professionally as Suzannah Powell, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and performance artist acclaimed for her ‘rap-cabaret’ artistry and complex lyricism. She has evolved from a schoolteacher to an internationally recognized musical talent, tackling social commentary through her work. After cultivating her unique ‘rap-cabaret’ artistry and distinctive stage persona, Boyfriend launched her professional music career in 2012 with her debut single, ‘Hunch and Munch.’ Prior to music, she worked in television production on shows like Gossip Girl before immersing herself in the New Orleans music scene. Her provocative performances and complex lyricism quickly garnered attention, leading to the acclaimed ‘Love Your Boyfriend’ EP trilogy (2014-2016).

A pivotal moment was touring with bounce music icon Big Freedia in 2015, which led to a feature on Big Freedia’s track ‘Marie Antoinette’ (2016) and co-producing/writing four songs for Big Freedia’s 2016 ‘A Very Big Freedia Christmazz’ EP. Boyfriend continued her artistic evolution with the 2017 ‘Next’ EP, produced with Pablo Dylan and featuring Cindy Wilson of The B-52’s. That same year brought significant festival presence, including a critically lauded SuperJam performance with Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Chance the Rapper at Bonnaroo, recognized as a top set by Consequence of Sound. She also performed at Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival and headlined a party in Tokyo for Marc Jacobs.

Boyfriend announced her highly anticipated concept concert album, ‘In the Garden,’ slated for 2025, which features Billy Porter and Jake Shears, reimagining the story of Adam and Eve from Eve’s perspective. In the music industry, she serves as a Governor of the Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy. She actively champions environmental sustainability, holding key positions with the Plastic Pollution Coalition and Grounds Krewe.
