About

Gilberto Santa Rosa Cortés, born on August 21, 1962, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, began his musical career at a young age, displaying an early interest in music. He made his recording debut in 1976 as a backup singer with the Mario Ortiz Orchestra. Shortly thereafter, he joined La Grande Orchestra as the lead singer, where he spent two years refining his craft under the guidance of Elias Lopez. During the 1980s, Santa Rosa continued to collaborate with prominent orchestras like the Puerto Rican All Stars, Tommy Olivencia Orchestra, and Willie Rosario orchestra, contributing to albums such as “Homenaje a Eddie Palmieri.” His early experiences laid the foundation for a distinctive style characterized by unique “soneo” (improvisation) that allowed him to excel across both tropical and romantic salsa genres.

In 1986, Santa Rosa established his own band and secured a contract with Combo Records. This period marked a significant turning point, with a series of successful releases including “Good Vibrations,” “De amor y salsa,” “Punto de vista,” “Vivir sin ella,” and “Perspectiva.” A notable achievement was his performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where he became the first tropical salsa singer to headline a concert there. This live event, later released as an album, showcased his improvisational talent, particularly during his four-minute unscripted addition to “Perdoname,” which subsequently became a staple and closing song in his shows. His career progression continued through the 1990s with participation in the all-star “La Puertorriqueña” project and a Billboard Lo Nuestro Award for Best Male Singer in 1990. He also represented Puerto Rico as a Good Will Ambassador in Japan in 1995, performing “De cara al viento” and having his songs translated into Japanese.

The 2000s saw Santa Rosa further solidify his legacy with successful albums like “Expresión” (1999), “Romántico” (2001), and “Viceversa” (2002), which gained considerable popularity across the United States and Latin America. He has dedicated efforts to preserving the musical heritage of Tito Rodríguez, acquiring memorabilia and staging tribute concerts. In 2005, he released a joint live album, “Dos soneros, una historia,” with his protégé Víctor Manuelle. His album “Contraste” (2007) achieved Gold and Platinum certification from the RIAA, selling over 1.5 million copies. Santa Rosa has also made significant contributions to public education through initiatives like Sapientis Week, and in 2017, he participated in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s single “Almost Like Praying” for Puerto Rico hurricane relief. He was honored with the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and holds the record for the most number-one albums on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart.
