Kristopher Thomas Campbell, known professionally as K Camp, was born on April 27, 1990, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His musical journey began in high school as part of a group called HBC (Head Busser Clique). After the group disbanded, Campbell continued pursuing music, frequently performing at open mic events. His independent career gained momentum in 2009 with the release of his mix “All Night,” which garnered attention in the Atlanta music scene and prompted him to seriously focus on his craft. Subsequent mixes like “Fan4Life,” “Show Money,” and “Slumlords” further solidified his presence in Atlanta. His rising profile in the independent Atlanta rap scene was enhanced by a guest appearance on Kirby Tha Hottest’s “Shawty Go.” K Camp’s ambition led him to secure a deal with Interscope Records, resulting in the release of his debut EP in 2014.
In April 2014, K Camp released his debut EP, “In Due Time,” a reimagining of one of his early mixtapes. The lead single, “Cut Her Off,” featuring 2 Chainz, achieved significant commercial success, peaking at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also topped USA Today’s Urban Airplay chart and received a nomination for Best Club Banger at the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards. Notably, five of his tracks topped the Billboard Twitter Real-Time survey in 2014, making him the most featured artist that year. Rolling Stone recognized K Camp as a “New Artist You Need To Know” in the same period. In 2015, he was included in the XXL Freshman Class, acknowledging him as a rising talent in hip-hop.
K Camp’s debut studio album, “Only Way Is Up,” was released in September 2015, featuring collaborations with artists such as Snoop Dogg, T.I., and Jeremih. The album’s second single, “Comfortable,” reached number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double platinum. “Only Way Is Up” was also recognized by Spin as one of the 50 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2015. After navigating a restrictive production deal, K Camp established his own record label, Rare Sound, in 2018. The label’s inaugural album, “RARE Sound,” was released in November 2018, followed by “Wayy 2 Kritical” in June 2019. His 2019 single, “Lottery (Renegade),” experienced a resurgence in popularity due to a viral dance challenge on TikTok, leading to a distribution deal with TikTok’s subsidiary, SoundOn, in 2023. K Camp continued to release music, including “Kiss Five” in 2020 and “Rare Family” in the same year, demonstrating consistent career progression.
