About

Born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor on November 7, 1996, in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand, Lorde showed an early talent for performance. Encouraged by her poet mother, she developed a strong lyrical foundation through extensive reading. In 2009, after winning a school talent show, she and a friend performed on a local radio show. This led to Universal Music Group signing her to a development deal in her early teens. In 2011, she began collaborating with producer Joel Little, and within weeks, they created her debut EP, “The Love Club”. She attended Takapuna Grammar School simultaneously, balancing her education with her burgeoning music career.

Lorde released “The Love Club EP” for free on SoundCloud in November 2012, gaining significant traction before its commercial release in March 2013. Its lead single, “Royals,” became an international sensation, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, making her the youngest pop star to achieve this feat since 1987. “Royals” went on to sell over 10 million units worldwide and earned her two Grammy Awards in 2014 for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year. Her debut studio album, “Pure Heroine,” released in September 2013, was both critically and commercially successful, selling over a million copies in the US by February 2014 and four million worldwide by May 2017. She also curated the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” in 2014, including her single “Yellow Flicker Beat,” which received a Golden Globe nomination.

Her sophomore album, “Melodrama,” released in 2017, marked a shift from her earlier minimalist style, incorporating more maximalist electronic beats and introspective post-breakup lyrics. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Lorde continued to evolve her sound with “Solar Power” (2021), exploring indie folk and psychedelic styles, followed by “Virgin” (2025), which combined dance-pop and synth-pop and garnered positive critical reception. Throughout her career, Lorde has received numerous accolades, including two Brit Awards and twenty Aotearoa Music Awards, establishing herself as a significant artist in contemporary music.
