About

Maurice Samuel Young, born on September 27, 1974, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, and raised in Liberty City, is professionally known as Trick Daddy. His early life was marked by challenges within the Liberty Square apartment complex, colloquially known as “Pork-N-Beans.” Introduced to street life by his father, he faced legal issues early on, including an arrest at age 15 for drug and firearm possession, leading to a prison sentence for attempted murder at age 20. Upon his release, Ted Lucas, the founder of Slip-n-Slide Records, encouraged him to pursue a music career.

Trick Daddy’s musical journey began to gain traction when he appeared on the track “Scarred” by former 2 Live Crew member Luther “Luke” Campbell in 1996. This collaboration brought him to the attention of Ted Lucas, who signed him to Slip-n-Slide Records. His debut album, “Based on a True Story,” released in 1997, achieved local popularity in Miami. In 1998, with the release of his second album, “www.thug.com,” he shortened his stage name. The track “Nann Nigga,” featuring Trina, became a national hit, reaching the third spot on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart. This success led to a joint venture deal with Atlantic Records, through which he released several albums including “Book of Thugs: Chapter AK Verse 47” (2000), “Thugs Are Us” (2001), and “Thug Holiday” (2002), all achieving moderate commercial success.

His career reached a peak with the 2004 album “Thug Matrimony: Married to the Streets,” which climbed to number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “Let’s Go,” featuring Twista and Lil Jon, became his most successful to date, peaking at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. He continued to release albums, including “Back by Thug Demand” (2006) and the independently released “Finally Famous: Born a Thug, Still a Thug” (2009) under his own Dunk Ryder Records label. He has also made appearances in film and television, including the 2010 film “Just Another Day” and the VH1 reality series “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” starting in 2018.
