Unkle, often stylised as U.N.K.L.E. or UNKLE, is a British musical outfit founded in 1992 by James Lavelle. Initially categorized as trip hop, the group gained prominence with their innovative sound and collaborations with various artists. Their first notable release was a remix for United Future Organization, which set the stage for their unique blend of genres. The collaboration with DJ Shadow on their debut album, Psyence Fiction, released in 1998, showcased an all-star lineup including Thom Yorke and Mike D, solidifying their reputation in the music industry despite mixed critical responses.
Following the departure of DJ Shadow, Unkle continued to evolve, incorporating new talents like the Scratch Perverts, who reimagined their work for live performances. The group released their second album, Never, Never, Land, in 2003, featuring contributions from renowned artists such as Ian Brown and Josh Homme. This album marked a significant shift towards a more electronic sound, further establishing Unkle’s versatility and creative direction.
In 2007, Unkle released their third album, War Stories, which included collaborations with notable musicians like Gavin Clark and Ian Astbury. This album was followed by a series of mix albums and soundtracks, including the critically acclaimed End Titles… Stories for Film in 2008, which highlighted their cinematic influences and innovative approach to music.
Unkle’s discography is extensive, featuring five studio albums and numerous collaborations, showcasing their ability to adapt and thrive in the ever-changing music landscape. Their recent works, including The Road: Part I and collaborations with artists like Michael Kiwanuka, continue to demonstrate their commitment to pushing musical boundaries and engaging with diverse influences.
