United States Abby Lee Miller is an American dance instructor, choreographer, television personality, and author, recognized for founding the Abby Lee Dance Company and her role on the reality series Dance Moms.

Abigale Lee Miller was born on September 21, 1965, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She immersed herself in dance from an early age, studying under her mother, Maryen Lorrain Miller, at the Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio. In 1980, Miller established the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) as a dance team within her mother’s studio. She later assumed full ownership of the studio in 1995, rebranding it as Reign Dance Productions. Miller became a certified member of Dance Masters of America (DMA) in 1986 through Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Chapter #10. Her affiliation with DMA was terminated in 2012, citing her reality-TV show Dance Moms as a misrepresentation of dance educators. In 2015, Miller expanded her presence by opening ALDC LA in Los Angeles, though this location was later closed and sold in 2017 before being re-established in a smaller capacity. The original Pittsburgh studio permanently closed in December 2022.
Miller gained widespread recognition in 2011 with her appearance on the Lifetime reality television series Dance Moms, which documented the training and careers of young dancers and the dynamics between Miller, her students, and their mothers. She remained a central figure on the show for eight seasons, concluding in September 2019. The success of Dance Moms led to several spin-off series, including Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, which ran for two seasons; Dance Moms: Miami; and Dance Moms: Abby’s Studio Rescue. Miller also served as a guest judge on Dancing with the Stars. In 2014, she authored the book “Everything I Learned about Life, I Learned in Dance Class.”
After leaving Dance Moms for a period in 2017, Miller announced her return for season eight in 2018, with Dance Moms: Resurrection premiering in 2019. She officially departed Dance Moms and Lifetime in May 2020. In June 2023, Miller launched her podcast, “Leave It On The Dance Floor,” where she discusses her experiences from Dance Moms and related shows. Throughout her career, Miller’s methods and personal life have been public, including legal challenges related to fraud and a diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma in 2018, which led to her becoming wheelchair-bound. She continues to engage with her audience through her YouTube channel, virtual dance classes, merchandise sales, and international teaching tours.
