Adriana Lima was born on June 12, 1981, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She was raised by her mother after her father left when she was six months old. Lima never initially considered a modeling career, despite winning several beauty pageants in elementary school. Her entry into modeling occurred at age 15 when she accompanied a friend to a competition. She subsequently won Ford’s “Supermodel of Brazil” contest and secured second place in “Supermodel of the World” in 1996. Following this, she signed with Elite Model Management in New York City.
Her career progressed rapidly, marked by her debut on the runway for Anna Sui at New York Fashion Week in September 1997. She became a Maybelline spokesmodel from 2003 to 2009 and appeared in campaigns for notable brands such as Armani and Versace. Lima’s extensive magazine covers include Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and GQ, with her April 2006 GQ cover becoming the highest-selling issue that year. She also diversified her career by acting in projects like the short film “The Follow” (2001) and guest appearances in television series such as “How I Met Your Mother” and “Ugly Betty.” In 2017, she hosted and executive produced the American reality competition show “American Beauty Stars.” Her commercial success was notably demonstrated by her 2008 Victoria’s Secret Super Bowl commercial, which garnered 103.7 million viewers, and her 2012 Super Bowl commercials for Teleflora and Kia Motors, which collectively reached over 200 million viewers and significantly boosted sales for Kia.
Lima is most recognized for her long-standing association with Victoria’s Secret, where she served as an Angel from 1999 to 2018, making her the longest-running model and earning the title of “most valuable Victoria’s Secret Angel” in 2017. She opened the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show five times and wore the Fantasy Bra three times. After 18 catwalks, she retired from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2018 but later returned for a special appearance in October 2024, with another confirmed for 2025. Beyond modeling, Lima has been involved in charitable work, supporting an orphanage in Salvador and raising funds for a hospital in Istanbul for children with leukemia. In 2023, she was appointed FIFA Global Fan Ambassador for the Women’s World Cup and executive produced the short documentary film “FIFA: A Love Letter To Rwanda.”
