About

Elizabeth Alice MacGraw, born on April 1, 1939, in Pound Ridge, New York, began her career in the fashion industry after studying art history at Wellesley College. She spent six years working at Harper’s Bazaar as a photographic assistant and then at Vogue as a fashion model and stylist. Her interest in fashion photography led her to become a top model, prior to her entry into acting in 1968. MacGraw’s film debut was an uncredited role in 1968’s “A Lovely Way to Die.” The following year, she gained widespread attention with her first leading role in “Goodbye, Columbus” (1969), earning her a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

Her career milestone arrived with the 1970 film “Love Story,” where she starred opposite Ryan O’Neal. This role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, solidifying her status as a global film star. In 1972, after just three films, MacGraw was honored with a hands and footprints ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. She continued her successful film career with “The Getaway” (1972) and later appeared in “Convoy” (1978), “Players” (1979), and “Just Tell Me What You Want” (1980). MacGraw also ventured into television, notably starring in the highly successful miniseries “The Winds of War” (1983) and appearing in 13 episodes of the TV series “Dynasty” in 1985.

Beyond her acting achievements, MacGraw has remained active in various capacities. In 1991, she published her autobiography, “Moving Pictures.” A devoted Hatha Yoga practitioner, she released the bestselling video “Ali MacGraw Yoga Mind and Body,” which popularized yoga in the United States. She is also a recognized animal welfare advocate, contributing to organizations like PETA and Animals Asia, and received the Humane Education Award from Animal Protection of New Mexico. In 2006, she made her Broadway debut in “Festen,” and in 2016, she reunited with Ryan O’Neal for a touring stage production of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters,” reinforcing her enduring appeal. In February 2021, MacGraw, alongside Ryan O’Neal, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
