Alison Sudol

Alison Sudol was born on December 23, 1984, in Seattle, Washington, to parents involved in dramatic arts. She moved to Los Angeles at age five after her parents’ divorce. She completed high school at 16, and instead of immediately pursuing higher education, she dedicated two years to developing her musical abilities. During her childhood, she was exposed to a diverse range of music, including artists like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, and later cited Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Simon and Garfunkel as major musical influences. Her passion for literature also led her to the works of C.S. Lewis and Charles Dickens. She adopted the stage name A Fine Frenzy, inspired by a line from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Sudol’s music career began after she taught herself piano and started writing songs. A demo she sent to EMI led to a record deal with Jason Flom. In March 2007, she performed at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference, opening for The Stooges. Her debut album, ‘One Cell in the Sea,’ was released shortly after and received positive reviews. The album’s first single, ‘Almost Lover,’ reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and achieved top 30 positions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Poland. She toured extensively in the US, Canada, Europe, and Portugal. Her song ‘You Picked Me’ was featured on iTunes and VH1. She released her second album, ‘Bomb in a Birdcage,’ in 2009, followed by ‘Pines’ in 2012, which was accompanied by an animated short film and companion book. In 2015, she announced she would no longer perform under the moniker A Fine Frenzy.

In 2014, Sudol transitioned into acting, appearing as Kaya in the first season of the Amazon Video series ‘Transparent.’ She also played Emma Wilson in the television series ‘Dig.’ A significant career milestone came in 2016 when she co-starred as Queenie Goldstein in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ a role she reprised in the sequels ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ (2018) and ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ (2022). After a break, Sudol returned to music in 2017, releasing singles and EPs under her own name, leading to her debut album ‘Still Come the Night’ in 2022. Beyond her artistic endeavors, she has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2011 and Greenpeace’s first Arctic Ambassador, demonstrating her commitment to environmental conservation.
