Allen Iverson, born on June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia, is a former professional basketball player. He played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as both a shooting guard and point guard. Iverson attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia, excelling as a dual-sport athlete in both football and basketball. He earned the Associated Press High School Player of the Year award in both sports and won the Division 5 AAA Virginia state championship in both. He later played college basketball for two years at Georgetown, where he achieved the school record for career scoring average at 23.0 points per game and earned the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award twice (1995, 1996).
In 1996, Iverson was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the first overall pick in the NBA Draft. He immediately made an impact, being named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1997. Over his career, Iverson was an 11-time NBA All-Star, winning the All-Star Game MVP Award in 2001 and 2005. His most decorated season came in 2000-01 when he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and led the 76ers to the NBA Finals. He was also a four-time NBA scoring champion (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005) and a three-time NBA steals leader (2001–2003).
After his successful tenure with the 76ers, Iverson played for the Denver Nuggets (2006–2008), Detroit Pistons (2008–2009), and Memphis Grizzlies (2009) before returning to the 76ers for the 2009–10 season. He concluded his professional playing career in Turkey with Beşiktaş in 2011 and officially retired from basketball in 2013, citing a loss of desire to play. In 2016, Allen Iverson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his significant contributions and achievements in the sport. In October 2023, Iverson was named Reebok’s Vice President of Basketball, a testament to his enduring influence.
