Jalen Romande Green was born on February 9, 2002, in Merced, California. He spent his early years in Livingston before moving to Fresno, California, in third grade, where he began playing Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball. Green played for San Joaquin Memorial High School for his first three years, where he consistently demonstrated exceptional talent. As a freshman, he was a full-time starter, averaging 18.1 points and 9 rebounds per game, earning MaxPreps Freshman All-American second team honors. In his sophomore season, he averaged 27.9 points and 7.7 rebounds, leading his team to a Central Section Division II title and being named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year. During his junior year, Green averaged 30.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, surpassing the school’s career scoring record and receiving USA Today All-USA California player of the year.
For his senior season, Green transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, California. He averaged 31.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5 assists, contributing to his team winning the Grind Session World championship. He was recognized as Sports Illustrated All-American player of the year. A consensus five-star recruit, Green was ranked as the number one shooting guard in the 2020 class by ESPN. In a significant career turning point, he chose to forgo college basketball and signed a one-year, $500,000 contract with the NBA G League Ignite on April 16, 2020, becoming the first player to join the developmental team. During his time with the Ignite, he averaged 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
Green was selected by the Houston Rockets as the second overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, marking him as the first player ever drafted directly from the G-League. He made his NBA debut on October 20, 2021. Throughout his rookie season, Green achieved multiple milestones, including a 30-point game with eight three-pointers in October 2021, and becoming one of only two NBA rookies since 1997 to score 30+ points in five consecutive games. He concluded his rookie season by scoring a career-high 41 points and was named Rookie of the Month for March and April, eventually earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In subsequent seasons with the Rockets, he continued to develop, setting a new career high with 42 points in January 2023. In October 2024, Green signed a three-year, $106 million contract extension with the Rockets. In July 2025, Green was traded to the Phoenix Suns as part of a seven-team trade.
