Alun Wyn Jones, born on September 19, 1985, in Swansea, Wales, began his rugby journey at a young age, playing for Bonymaen RFC. He pursued education alongside his burgeoning athletic career, studying law part-time at Swansea University and graduating in 2010. His professional rugby career began with Swansea RFC while in the Ospreys Academy, making his Ospreys debut on September 4, 2005. Early in his career, he secured his first trophy, the 2006–07 Celtic League title, with the Ospreys. His consistent performance led to him becoming the Ospreys’ club captain for the 2010–11 season, and he held that leadership position for Wales’ most successful region.
Jones distinguished himself internationally, making his senior Wales debut in 2006. He quickly became a key player for Wales, participating in multiple Six Nations campaigns and Rugby World Cups. A significant milestone was achieved in 2008 when he was part of the Wales side that secured a Grand Slam. His leadership qualities were recognized early, as he captained Wales for the first time in 2009 against Italy, becoming the 126th player to do so. His career is also marked by an impressive four British & Irish Lions tours in 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021. He notably captained the Lions in the decisive third Test win in Sydney in 2013, sealing their first series win in 16 years, and again in 2021. He retired from international rugby in May 2023.
His career saw him achieve numerous records and accolades. With 160 caps to his name (148 for Wales and 12 for the Lions), he holds the record as the world’s most-capped rugby union player. He is one of only seven Wales players to have won three Grand Slams, including titles in 2008, 2012, and 2019. In 2019, he was named the Player of the Championship for the Six Nations, further cementing his status as a prominent figure in rugby. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Jones was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours.
