Alysha Newman

Alysha Newman is a Canadian Olympic bronze medallist and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in pole vault, recognized for setting Canadian national and Commonwealth Games records. After becoming the first Canadian high school girl to clear four meters in pole vault and setting national youth and junior records, Alysha Newman quickly established herself as a formidable athlete on the international stage. Her early promise was evident when she secured a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, representing Canada. While attending the University of Miami, Newman continued her upward trajectory, breaking the school record, the ACC record, and a Canadian national record with an impressive vault of 4.60m in 2016.

That same year, she made her Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, showcasing her talent on the world’s biggest stage. During her collegiate career, Newman earned six First Team All-American citations at the University of Miami. Newman’s career continued to build momentum, leading to significant milestones. In 2017, she achieved a 7th-place finish at the World Athletics Championships.

This monumental achievement marked Canada’s first Olympic medal in women’s pole vault and the first Olympic pole vault medal for the country since 1912. Newman set a new Canadian national record of 4.85m to achieve this podium finish, underscoring her continued evolution and commitment to breaking barriers in track and field.
