Alysha Newman, born on June 29, 1994, in London, Ontario, is a Canadian track and field athlete specializing in the pole vault. Her athletic journey began in gymnastics, which she pursued until a lower back injury at age 13 led her to transition to track and field. Encouraged by a coach who recognized her gymnastics background as an asset, Newman discovered pole vaulting at age 16. She quickly excelled, becoming the first Canadian high school girl to clear four meters, setting national youth and junior records. By 2014, she represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games, earning a bronze medal, signifying her early promise in the sport.
Newman’s career continued its upward trajectory with significant milestones. In 2016, while attending the University of Miami, she broke the school record, ACC record, and Canadian national record with a vault of 4.60m. She went on to make her Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games. Her performance improved further in 2018 at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where she clinched a gold medal and set a new Commonwealth pole vault record with a height of 4.75m. In 2019, she consistently broke her own Canadian record, reaching 4.82m at the Diamond League meet in Paris, a mark she matched indoors in Zurich. She also earned a bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima. Her resilience was tested through various injuries, including a career-threatening patellar tendon tear in 2018 and a concussion in 2021, yet she persevered.
Her dedication culminated in her third Olympic appearance at the Paris 2024 Games, where she secured a bronze medal in the women’s pole vault. This historic achievement marked Canada’s first Olympic medal in women’s pole vault and the first Olympic pole vault medal for the country since 1912. Newman set a new Canadian record of 4.85m to achieve this podium finish, demonstrating her continued evolution and commitment. Throughout her career, Newman has earned six First Team All-American citations while at the University of Miami and has consistently competed on the international stage, including multiple World Athletics Championships and World Athletics Indoor Championships.
