Raised in Curitiba, he began his martial arts journey studying jiu-jitsu with neighborhood children, later expanding his training to include taekwondo, capoeira, and muay Thai. Silva made his professional MMA debut in 1997, quickly establishing a reputation for his precise striking and impressive knockout power. His early career saw him compete in various promotions globally, including Shooto, where he became the Shooto Middleweight Champion in 2001, and Cage Rage, where he also held the Cage Rage Middleweight Championship.
Silva’s career reached iconic status during his tenure with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which he joined in 2006. He swiftly captured the UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 64 in October 2006, defeating Rich Franklin by TKO. This marked the beginning of his record-setting championship reign, which lasted 2,457 days and included 10 successful title defenses. He also secured a UFC record of 16 consecutive victories during this period.
