Angela Gibbs is a versatile performer, producer, writer, and director with a four-decade career in the entertainment world. As an actor, her credits include films, “Love Jacked,” “Drumline,” “Think Like A Man,” and “Straight Outta Compton.” “End of the World: As We Know It,” “On My Block,” “Insecure,” “American Crimes: The People against OJ,” “L.A. Dragnet,” “Shameless,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Crossing Jordon,” “Nip/Tuck,” and “Monk” are among the shows in which Gibbs has been as a featured actress and guest star. She lent her voice to the animated shows Cartoon Network’s “Sealab 2021” and Adult Swim’s “Black Jesus” as a voice actress.
Gibbs won the Mary Pickford Award for directing while at the American Film Institute. Her short film “Ties That Bind” was nominated for an HBO Shorts Award and aired on BET’s Best Shorts series. Gibbs has coached Alejandro G. Inarritu on both his Oscar-winning films “Birdman” and “The Revenant” as an acting teacher. For highly renowned director Yaan Demange, Gibbs trained newbie Demetrius Shipp for the role of Tupac in “All Eyes On Me” and Richie Merritt on “White Boy Rick.” She worked in the Drama Department at Spelman College. She created the play “227” as a theatrical producer, which was later adapted by Norman Lear, who helped develop it into the hit NBC television series. Angela won two NAACP Image Awards for producing “227” and “Checkmates,” a Broadway production starring Denzel Washington and Ruby Dee. For ten years, Gibbs had the honor of writing the Trumpet Awards.
