Anna Olson was born on May 4, 1968, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents later immigrated to Toronto, Canada, where she spent her formative years. Olson initially pursued an academic path, earning a degree in political science and sociology from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. She briefly worked in a bank in downtown Toronto, but her passion for food led her to a significant career change. A “muffin epiphany” prompted her to enroll in the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.
Upon graduating, Olson traveled across the United States before settling in Niagara Falls. She began her professional culinary career as a line cook at the Inn on the Twenty in Jordan, Ontario, and was quickly promoted to pastry chef, a role she held for seven years. During this time, she met and married fellow chef Michael Olson. Together, they co-authored “The Inn on the Twenty Cookbook” in 2000. Her television career began with Food Network Canada, hosting shows like “Sugar” (2002-2007) and “Kitchen Equipped” (2005-2007). She further expanded her reach with “Fresh with Anna Olson” (2008-2010), and later “Bake with Anna Olson” (2012-2015).
Olson has authored several cookbooks, including “Sugar” (2004), “Anna & Michael Olson Cook at Home” (2005), and “Bake with Anna Olson: More than 125 Simple, Scrumptious and Sensational Recipes to Make You a Better Baker” (2016), which won a Taste Canada Award. She has also been a judge on “Great Chocolate Showdown” and “Junior Chef Showdown” since 2020. Beyond her media presence, Olson has supported community initiatives, such as the Niagara Women’s Enterprise Centre, and maintains a strong online presence through her “Oh Yum with Anna Olson” YouTube channel.
