About

Atsuko Okatsuka was born in Taiwan in 1988 to a Japanese father and a Taiwanese mother, spending her early childhood in Japan. Her parents divorced when she was very young, and her mother developed schizophrenia. At the age of eight, Okatsuka was taken to the United States by her maternal grandmother to live with her mother, where she lived undocumented for seven years in Los Angeles. Her early life experiences, including navigating her mother’s illness and her undocumented status, significantly shaped her comedic voice, leading her to use humor and outlandishness to connect with those around her. She was inspired by comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Lucille Ball, Margaret Cho, and Ken Shimura, developing a performance style that eventually became her signature.

Okatsuka pursued her education, attending Venice High School and later studying psychology at UC Riverside before graduating from California Institute of the Arts. While attending community college, she discovered a serious interest in stand-up comedy. She started performing in small clubs across Los Angeles, initially finding an entry point through an all-women’s stand-up class, which provided a safer alternative to traditional open mics. Her career began to gain momentum, leading to her debut album in 2020 and notable television appearances. She became known for her engaging stage presence and ability to find humor in challenging circumstances.

Throughout her career, Okatsuka has achieved several milestones, including being named one of Variety’s “Top 10 Comics to Watch” in 2022. She is the second Asian American woman to have a stand-up special on HBO, “The Intruder,” which premiered in December 2022 and was critically acclaimed, earning accolades from The New York Times and Vulture. She also started the viral #Dropchallenge with her grandmother, gaining widespread recognition. Her work extends beyond stand-up to include acting roles in film and television, and participation in various podcasts.
