Belal Muhammad was born on July 9, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois, to Palestinian parents. He has four siblings: an older brother, older sister, and two younger brothers. Muhammad wrestled at Bogan High School, where future PFL champion Louis Taylor was his wrestling coach, who later assisted in his amateur training. He pursued higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, studying to become a lawyer before fully committing to his mixed martial arts career, which commenced professionally in 2012.
Muhammad’s career progression saw him compete in Bellator and Titan FC early on. A significant milestone occurred on April 30, 2016, when he secured a TKO victory over Steve Carl, earning him the inaugural Titan FC Welterweight Championship and boosting his professional record to 9-0. This achievement led to his signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) later that year. His UFC debut came on July 7, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 90 against Alan Jouban, a match for which both fighters received “Fight of the Night” bonuses despite Muhammad’s unanimous decision loss. Over the years, Muhammad consistently showcased his skills, accumulating a series of decision victories and earning a reputation for his durable fighting style and strong wrestling background.
Key achievements include his “Performance of the Night” bonus at UFC 242 in September 2019, where he won via submission against Takashi Sato, and another “Performance of the Night” bonus at UFC 280 in October 2022 with a TKO win over Sean Brady. A significant turning point in his career came on July 27, 2024, at UFC 304, when he defeated Leon Edwards by unanimous decision to become the UFC Welterweight Champion. Although he lost the title to Jack Della Maddalena on May 10, 2025, at UFC 315, earning another “Fight of the Night” award, Muhammad remains a top contender. He is currently scheduled to face Ian Machado Garry on November 22, 2025, at UFC Fight Night 265.
