Bell & Spurling

Bell & Spurling, an English musical and comedy duo, was formed in the 1990s by Martin Bell from Chigwell and Johnny Spurling from Romford. Both musicians began their careers as session singers, performing at private gatherings for figures such as Rod Stewart and Simon Cowell. Their powerful and soulful voices contributed to their early recognition. The duo later gained prominence for their comedic football anthems, notably achieving commercial success with their single “Sven, Sven, Sven.” This track, released in 2001, reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart and garnered over half a million single sales, with its inclusion on compilation albums contributing to over a million units sold.

Following the success of “Sven, Sven, Sven,” which was inspired by the England football team’s 5–1 victory against Germany, Bell & Spurling released another hit, “Goldenballs (Mr Beckham to You),” in 2002, which charted at number 25. Their musical achievements led to multiple appearances on the television program Top of the Pops. Beyond their musical endeavors, Bell & Spurling expanded their presence in media, hosting a radio show on Capital Gold and later their own program, “The Bell & Spurling Show,” on Love Sport Radio. This show covered various sports topics, demonstrating their engagement beyond music.

Throughout their career, the duo has participated in diverse projects reflecting their individual and combined talents. Martin Bell has continued writing and performing with his band, The Atlantic Band, and hosts corporate functions. He also wrote and performed the song “Running Free” for the film “Run for Your Wife.” Johnny Spurling pursued acting, appearing in the comedy film “The Flirting Club” (2010), and performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2018 with “Terry Alderton’s All Crazy Now.” In 2018, coinciding with the World Cup in Russia, they updated their signature anthem, releasing “Gareth, Gareth, Gareth.” They maintain a public profile, making regular guest appearances on GB News, and have performed internationally in locations such as Qatar and Dubai during the World Cup.
