Her early life was influenced by the arts; her mother, Rosalind Gould, was an actress, and her father, Robert Kaufmann Adams, was a former CBS vice president, actor, and producer. She received formal training at the High School for the Performing Arts and the School of the American Ballet. Adams began her career on the stage, which provided a foundation for her later work in various cinematic and television productions.
Adams’s film career progressed significantly with roles in prominent films of the late 1970s and early 1980s. She appeared opposite Richard Gere and Sam Shepard in Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” (1978). In the same year, she starred in Philip Kaufman’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978), a role for which she received a Saturn Award for Best Actress nomination. Her filmography also includes “Cuba” (1979) with Sean Connery and Stephen King’s “The Dead Zone” (1983) alongside Christopher Walken. She reprised an off-Broadway role in the film adaptation of Kevin Wade’s “Key Exchange” (1985). By 1992, she appeared in “Gas Food Lodging,” earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female.
