Cameron Jerrell Newton was born on May 11, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia. He initially attended the University of Florida, playing for the Florida Gators football team in 2007 and 2008. As a freshman, he served as backup to Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, playing in five games and accumulating 40 passing yards and 103 rushing yards with three touchdowns. In 2008, he sustained an ankle injury, leading to a medical redshirt season. In 2009, Newton transferred to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, leading his team to the NJCAA National Football Championship. During this period, he recorded 2,833 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, alongside 655 rushing yards. He was recognized as a Juco All-American honorable mention and the top-ranked junior college quarterback.
Newton then transferred to Auburn University, where he quickly became the starting quarterback for the 2010 season. He led Auburn to an undefeated season, culminating in a victory in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. During this season, Newton received the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, and was named the AP College Football Player of the Year. He became the third Auburn player to win the Heisman Trophy. On December 1, 2010, the NCAA reinstated Newton’s eligibility after an investigation into his recruitment, finding no sufficient evidence of his knowledge of his father’s actions. Following his national championship win, Newton declared for the 2011 NFL draft.
