About

Chiaka Ogbogu was born on April 15, 1995, in Newark, New Jersey, to Nigerian immigrant parents. Shortly after her birth, her family relocated to Dallas. She commenced her volleyball journey during middle school and subsequently led Coppell High School to two consecutive Texas 5A state championships in 2011 and 2012, earning the Gatorade Texas High School Player of the Year honors in 2012. Ogbogu continued her collegiate career at the University of Texas at Austin, where she established herself as a prominent player, achieving three-time AVCA First Team All-American distinctions and being named the 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year. She concluded her time at Texas holding the school record for most career blocks and block assists. Her academic pursuits included a major in health promotion with a minor in human development and family sciences.

Ogbogu’s professional career began in 2017 in Italy with Il Bisonte Firenze. She then moved to the Polish club Chemik Police for the 2018–2019 season, followed by a return to Italy to play for Imoco Volley Conegliano in the 2019–2020 season. Her club career continued in Turkey with Eczacıbaşı Dynavit in 2020, before joining VakıfBank for the 2021–2022 season, where she remained until 2024. In April 2024, League One Volleyball (LOVB) announced Ogbogu as a founding member of its Austin team for the league’s inaugural season. It was announced in June 2025 that she would return to VakıfBank for the 2025/2026 season. Throughout her club career, she has secured multiple championships, including the 2018-19 Polish Cup, 2019 Italian Supercup, 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship, and the 2021–22 CEV Women’s Champions League. Individuals accolades include “Best Middle Blocker” at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship and the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Since 2018, Ogbogu has been a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, making her debut at the 2018 Pan American Cup, where the team won gold. She has since contributed to gold medals at the 2019 and 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. A significant milestone in her career is her participation in the Olympic Games, where she earned a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the Paris Games, she was recognized as the “Best Middle Blocker” and tied an Olympic record for most blocks in a single match with eight. Beyond her athletic achievements, Ogbogu advocates for the growth of volleyball and emphasizes the importance of representation for Black volleyball players. She has also engaged in modeling for brands such as Ralph Lauren and Milani Cosmetics, showcasing her diverse interests outside of sports.
