Cara Cunningham, born Christopher Cunningham on December 7, 1987, in Bristol, Tennessee, gained widespread recognition under the moniker Chris Crocker. Raised by their grandparents in a fundamentalist Pentecostal household in East Tennessee, Cunningham’s early life was marked by challenges, including bullying and death threats due to their gender non-conforming presentation in a conservative environment. Seeking an outlet for self-expression, Cunningham began uploading self-produced videos to platforms like MySpace and YouTube in June 2006. These early vlogs, characterized by raw monologues discussing topics from LGBTQ+ life to personal experiences, quickly garnered a significant following, establishing Cunningham as a prominent figure in the emerging world of online celebrity.

Cunningham’s career reached an international scale in September 2007 with the viral video, “Leave Britney Alone!” In this emotional monologue, a then 19-year-old Cunningham tearfully defended pop singer Britney Spears against media criticism following her 2007 MTV Video Music Awards performance. The video amassed over four million views within two days, attracting global media attention and generating hundreds of parodies and discussions across major news outlets like CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and late-night shows. This viral moment transformed Cunningham into an overnight internet sensation, leading to interviews, a nomination for a YouTube Award, and a development deal with 44 Blue Productions for a reality television show titled “Chris Crocker’s 15 Minutes More.” Despite the initial ridicule and controversy surrounding the video, including accusations of narcissism and melodrama, Cunningham consistently maintained the authenticity of their emotions. The video’s powerful message, calling for empathy and understanding, has seen a significant re-evaluation over time, particularly in light of events surrounding Britney Spears in the following years.

Beyond their viral internet fame, Cunningham diversified their career into various creative endeavors. They released their debut single, “Mind in the Gutter,” in 2008, followed by the EP “The First Bite” in 2011 and “Walls Down” in 2013 under the stage name Chris Cunningham-Crocker. Their life and journey were also the subject of the HBO documentary “Me at the Zoo,” which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. In 2012, Cunningham ventured into adult entertainment, starring in a pornographic film for Maverick Men and later in “Chris Crocker’s Raw Love” digitally released by Lucas Entertainment. In August 2021, Cunningham publicly came out as transgender and began feminizing hormone therapy, officially changing their first name to Cara, marking a significant personal milestone in their very public life.
