Leslie Frazier was born on April 3, 1959, in Columbus, Mississippi. He began his football career at Stephen D. Lee High School, excelling in football and baseball. He later attended Alcorn State University, where he was an All-American defensive back and baseball standout, majoring in business administration. Frazier’s collegiate career was distinguished by strong defensive performances, including setting a school record with nine interceptions in his sophomore year. In 1981, he signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent, where he played six seasons as a defensive back, notably starting for the 1985 Super Bowl XX championship team. His playing career concluded early due to a knee injury sustained during that Super Bowl.
Frazier transitioned to coaching in 1988, becoming the first head coach for Trinity International University’s football program. He led the team to two Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference titles before moving to the University of Illinois as a defensive backs coach in 1997. His NFL coaching career began in 1999 with the Philadelphia Eagles, followed by roles as defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals (2003-2004) and defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts (2005-2006), where he contributed to a Super Bowl XLI victory. He served as head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2010 to 2013, leading them to a playoff appearance in 2012, and later held defensive coordinator positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-2015) and secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens (2016).
From 2017 to 2022, Frazier was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Buffalo Bills. During his tenure, his defenses consistently ranked among the league’s best, finishing first in both yards and points allowed in 2021. In February 2024, Frazier joined the Seattle Seahawks as assistant head coach, marking his 25th season as an NFL coach. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his contributions to the sport, including inductions into the SWAC Hall of Fame (2007), Alcorn State Hall of Fame (2012), Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame (2017), and Black College Football Hall of Fame (2023).
