Jayden Daniels was born on December 18, 2000, in Fontana, California, and raised in San Bernardino. He began playing flag football at age five as a cornerback and later transitioned to tackle football as a quarterback at age seven in the Pop Warner league. During his high school career at Cajon High School, Daniels set CIF-Southern Section records with 210 total touchdowns and over 17,600 total yards across 53 games, leading his team to two Citrus Belt League championships and state finals appearances. He was recognized as a four-star prospect and the top dual-threat quarterback of his class by 247Sports.
Daniels played college football for the Arizona State Sun Devils from 2019 to 2021, where he made history as the first true freshman quarterback to start a season-opener. His tenure at Arizona State included being named the MVP of the 2019 Sun Bowl and setting the freshman passing yards record for the Sun Devils. In 2022, he transferred to LSU, quickly becoming the starting quarterback and leading the Tigers to significant victories, including an overtime win against the Alabama Crimson Tide. In his 2023 senior season, Daniels received widespread acclaim, winning the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award, and Davey O’Brien Award, among others, after leading the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in total yards and setting the single-season passer rating record. He concluded his college career with over 16,000 total yards in 55 games.
Selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniels quickly established himself in the professional league. He scored two touchdowns in his NFL debut and earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 3, setting an NFL rookie completion percentage record. Despite a rib injury in the 2024 season, he returned to throw a game-winning Hail Mary touchdown. Daniels finished his rookie NFL season setting new records for a rookie quarterback in points per game, completion percentage, rushing yards, and Commanders’ rookie passing yards, leading the team to its best regular season record since 1991 and earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl honors.
