Claire Cashmore, born on May 21, 1988, in Redditch, England, entered competitive sports at a young age, starting with running and swimming despite being born without a left forearm. Her early dedication led her to become a prominent figure in Paralympic swimming, where she made her debut for ParalympicsGB at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games at the age of 16, earning two bronze medals. Throughout her swimming career, she competed in four consecutive Paralympic Games, securing eight medals. This included a gold medal in the 4x100m 34 points medley relay at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, alongside multiple silver and bronze medals in various breaststroke and medley events.
Following her success at Rio 2016, Cashmore transitioned to Paratriathlon through the UK Sport talent transfer programme. She quickly established herself in the PTS5 category, achieving a silver medal at the 2018 ITU World Championships. Her career in paratriathlon saw rapid progression, with victories at the Groupe Copley World Paratriathlon Series Montreal and the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in 2019, where she became the ITU World Champion in the PTS5 classification. This pivotal year also included several silver medals in international competitions, highlighting her adaptability and sustained excellence in a new sport.
Cashmore continued to achieve significant milestones in paratriathlon, earning a bronze medal at her first Paralympic Games in the new sport at Tokyo 2020. Her performance in the French capital at Paris 2024 further solidified her legacy, where she claimed a silver medal in the women’s Para triathlon PTS5 event, bringing her total Paralympic medal count to ten. As of 2023, she is also a three-time European champion in paratriathlon. Claire is a member of the ParalympicsGB’s Athletes’ Commission, advocating for athletes and contributing to the future direction of the team.
