About

Born on October 3, 1958, in Portland, New South Wales, Australia, Craig Bellamy began his rugby league journey playing junior football for Portland Colts. He also played for Oberon Tigers as a teenager before joining Macquarie United in the Newcastle Rugby League in 1979. In 1982, Bellamy was signed by the Canberra Raiders for their debut season, where he spent the majority of his playing career. He played in various positions, including centre, fullback, winger, five-eighth, and lock. A notable playing achievement includes his participation from the bench in Canberra’s 18–14 win against Penrith in the 1990 Grand Final at the Sydney Football Stadium. Following the 1989 NSWRL season Grand Final win, for which he was not selected to play, Bellamy traveled with the Raiders to England for the 1989 World Club Challenge.

After his playing career, Bellamy transitioned into coaching, starting in the 1990s. In 1995, he coached the Canberra Raiders’ Presidents Cup team to a premiership victory. He then joined the Brisbane Broncos in 1997 as performance coordinator and assistant coach to Wayne Bennett, contributing to their 1998 NRL Grand Final win. In 2002, Bellamy gained significant NRL head coaching experience when he stepped in for Wayne Bennett during State of Origin duty, leading the ‘Baby Broncos’ to an upset victory over the Wests Tigers. This experience paved the way for his appointment as head coach of the Melbourne Storm in 2003, a position he has held since. His tenure at the Storm has been marked by sustained success, including multiple Grand Final appearances and premierships.

Under Bellamy’s leadership, the Melbourne Storm achieved significant milestones, including winning the 2007 Grand Final (later stripped due to salary cap breaches), the 2009 Grand Final (also later stripped), and legitimate premierships in 2012, 2017, and 2020. He has consistently maintained a win-loss ratio above 50% in every season coached and has led the Storm to finals football every year, with the exception of the 2010 season due to salary cap penalties. Bellamy coached the New South Wales State of Origin team from 2008 to 2010. He has been recognized as the Dally M Coach of the Year multiple times (2006, 2007, 2011, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2024) and the RLIF Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012. Bellamy’s coaching philosophy has been credited with transforming players and building championship teams.
