Dame Mary Peters

Dame Mary Peters achieved her most significant athletic success at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, winning the gold medal in pentathlon with a new world record. Competing in her 45th pentathlon, Peters secured the gold medal and set a world record of 4,801 points, holding a decisive 10-point lead over competitor Heide Rosendahl-Ecker. This crowning achievement followed earlier Olympic appearances at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where she finished fourth, and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, placing ninth. Her distinguished competitive career, which began in 1955, included winning seven WAAA pentathlon titles and securing two gold medals at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in both pentathlon and shot put.

Her tireless dedication to sport and community was recognized through a series of significant appointments, including Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1990 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2000. She also lent her expertise as team manager for several women’s international athletic teams. Dame Mary Peters served as the esteemed Lord Lieutenant of the City of Belfast from 2009 to 2014, representing Her Majesty The Queen in the city. Her unwavering commitment to athletics and community service culminated in her appointment as a Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter in 2019, one of the highest honors in the United Kingdom.

She continues her influential work as a dedicated advocate for youth sports development, through the Mary Peters Trust and various other initiatives, shaping the next generation of athletes in Northern Ireland.
