About

Dejounte Murray was born on September 19, 1996, in Seattle, Washington. Growing up in the South End area, he experienced difficult circumstances, including exposure to gun violence, homelessness, and parental incarceration. Prior to high school, Murray spent time in juvenile detention. His basketball talent was cultivated at Rainier Beach High School, a program known for producing NBA players. Jamal Crawford, an NBA veteran, encouraged Murray to take basketball seriously. Murray led Rainier Beach to three Class 3A state championships and earned recognition as Washington Mr. Basketball in 2015.

Murray played one season of college basketball at the University of Washington (2015–2016), where he was named second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Averaging 16.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, he started all 34 games. Following his freshman year, Murray declared for the NBA draft, forgoing his remaining college eligibility. He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs as the 29th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. During his rookie season (2016–2017), he also spent time with the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League.

His career progression with the Spurs included stepping into a starting role during the 2017 playoffs when Tony Parker was injured. In 2018, he earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors, becoming the youngest player at the time to do so. In October 2019, he signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension with the Spurs. He achieved his first career triple-double in December 2020. In February 2022, Murray was named to his first NBA All-Star team. He was subsequently traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 2022, where he continued to demonstrate strong performance, including career-high scoring. In 2024, Murray was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans, but his season was cut short by a torn right Achilles tendon in January 2025.
