Dennis Lee Dixon Jr. was born on January 11, 1985, in Oakland, California. He began his football career as the starting quarterback for San Leandro High School in his sophomore year. During his senior season in 2002, he accumulated 2,426 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, leading his team to a 12-1 record. Dixon concluded his high school career with 5,951 yards and 79 touchdowns, achieving a 36-3 record for San Leandro. He was also a recruited baseball player, drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft, but chose to pursue a college education.
Dixon attended the University of Oregon, where he grayshirted the 2003 season before playing his freshman year in 2004. In his sophomore year of 2005, he stepped in as quarterback after Kellen Clemens suffered an injury, guiding the Ducks to four regular season wins. By his junior season in 2006, Dixon was named the full-time starter, leading the team to a 4-0 start and finishing the season fourth in the conference for total offense. In his senior year (2007), Dixon led the Ducks to an impressive run, earning accolades such as Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week and USA Today National Player of the Week. He sustained a significant knee injury, tearing his ACL, which impacted the latter part of his collegiate season. Despite the injury, Dixon completed his college career with 5,129 passing yards and 38 touchdowns.
Dixon was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft. He made his first NFL start in 2009 against the Baltimore Ravens. In 2010, he started the season as the Steelers’ quarterback due to Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension, but a torn meniscus prematurely ended his season. After his time with the Steelers, Dixon was a member of the Baltimore Ravens practice squad in 2012, when they won Super Bowl XLVII. He later had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013), Buffalo Bills (2013-2014), and Arizona Cardinals (2014). Following his NFL career, Dixon founded DixonFit, a training program and service in Beaverton, Oregon, where he coaches and trains quarterbacks.
