About

Dominic Christopher Sandbrook was born on October 2, 1974, in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England. He pursued his education at Malvern College before attending Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied history and French. He furthered his academic career by earning a Master of Letters (MLitt) degree in history from the University of St Andrews and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Jesus College, Cambridge, completing his doctoral thesis on “The political career of Senator Eugene McCarthy” in 2002. His early academic roles included a lectureship in history at the University of Sheffield, and he has held positions as a senior fellow at the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford and a visiting professor at King’s College London.

Sandbrook transitioned into a prolific writing career, becoming known for his series of books on post-war British history. His first book, a biography of Eugene McCarthy, was published in 2004. He gained significant recognition with “Never Had It So Good” (2005), which covered British history from the Suez Crisis to the Beatles (1956–63). This was followed by “White Heat” (2006), detailing the years 1964–70, “State of Emergency” (2010), focusing on 1970–74, “Seasons in the Sun” documenting 1974–79, and “Who Dares Wins” (2019), which covered 1979–82. Beyond his book series, Sandbrook has contributed as a columnist and writer for various publications, including the Daily Mail, The Sunday Times, and The Daily Telegraph.

In addition to his literary achievements, Sandbrook has forged a successful career in broadcasting. He has presented numerous BBC television and radio documentaries, covering topics ranging from British bureaucracy to the history of science fiction. His Radio Four series “SlapDash Britain” and “The People’s Post” are notable examples. Since 2020, he has co-hosted “The Rest is History” podcast with fellow historian Tom Holland, which has achieved considerable popularity. In July 2021, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS), acknowledging his contributions to the field of history.
