Born on April 22, 1994, in York, Maine, Duncan McBryde Robinson grew up in New Castle, New Hampshire. He started his basketball journey as a 5-foot-7-inch point guard at The Governor’s Academy in 2008. After averaging 18.5 points as a senior, he pursued a postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy to enhance his college prospects, leading them to a 28-1 record and the NEPSAC Class A title in 2013, where he was named Tournament MVP. Despite showing significant growth, including increasing his height to 6 feet 8 inches and weight to 195 pounds, his only scholarship offer came from an NCAA Division II school. He chose to attend Division III Williams College, making an immediate impact by becoming the only freshman starter under head coach Mike Maker.
At Williams College (2013-2014), Robinson excelled, setting school records for single-season minutes played (1,110) and freshman-season points (548). He led the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage (44.8%) and received accolades such as NESCAC Rookie of the Year and Fourth-team D3Hoops.com All-American. Following his freshman year, he transferred to the University of Michigan, redshirting the 2014-15 season. During his time at Michigan (2015-2018), he became a key player, leading the Big Ten Conference in three-point shooting percentage early in the 2015-16 season. He was instrumental in Michigan’s back-to-back Big Ten Conference tournament championships in 2017 and 2018, and was named the 2018 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year.
After going undrafted in the 2018 NBA draft, Robinson signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat (2018-2025). His career with the Heat was marked by rapid ascent, breaking numerous NBA and franchise records for three-point shooting, including becoming the fastest player to reach 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 career three-pointers. He played a crucial role in the Heat’s NBA Finals appearances in 2020 and 2023. In 2021, he signed a five-year, $90 million deal, the largest contract in NBA history for an undrafted player. In 2025, Robinson was traded to the Detroit Pistons as part of a sign-and-trade deal.
