United States Dwayne Reed is an award-winning Chicago educator, author, rapper, and viral sensation, known for his innovative approach to engaging students through rap and storytelling.
Dwayne Reed is recognized as "America's Favorite Rapping Teacher" by NEA and his book, "Simon B. Rhymin'," was featured as the December pick for middle-grade readers on NEA’s Read Across America calendar, which celebrates reading and diverse books. He was also a guest on the "Read (and Rap) Across America with Dwayne Reed" podcast by NEA.
DoSomething.org and 3M collaborated with Dwayne Reed to launch the "Thanks a Billion" campaign, aiming to thank science teachers. This partnership highlights Reed's involvement in initiatives that support educators and promote appreciation for their work.
Old Navy partnered with Dwayne Reed and Pharrell Williams' creative collective, i am OTHER, for a back-to-school campaign. Reed wrote and arranged an original song, "Welcome Back to School," for the campaign, which served as a sequel to his viral 2016 video. This collaboration positioned teachers as 'rock stars' and celebrated their role in welcoming students back to school. Reed was one of eight teachers invited to participate in this campaign.

Dwayne Reed, born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, pursued a career in education after attending Eastern Illinois University for elementary and middle school teaching. His passion for working with children and his belief in the power of service led him to the classroom. In 2016, Reed gained national attention with his viral music video, “Welcome to the 4th Grade,” which showcased his unique method of introducing himself to students through rap. This video quickly brought him into the national spotlight, appearing on platforms like Good Morning America and BBC, and solidified his reputation as “America’s Favorite Rapping Teacher.” He currently teaches in Chicago Public Schools, focusing on a specials course designed to help children recognize their identity, appreciate others’ identities, and advocate for justice.
Reed extended his innovative approach beyond the classroom, becoming a published author. His middle-grade book, “Simon B. Rhymin’,” released in 2021, is an ode to his younger self and emphasizes representation for Black and Brown children, covering themes of community building, bullying, and self-confidence. The book became the December pick for middle-grade readers on NEA’s Read Across America calendar, celebrating diverse books and inclusion. The success of “Simon B. Rhymin'” led to a series, including “Simon B. Rhymin’ Takes a Stand” and “Simon B. Rhymin’ Gets in the Game.”
In addition to his work with children’s literature, Reed authored “Be That Teacher: Rehumanizing Education with Unapologetic Authenticity,” a book for fellow educators. This publication encourages teachers to bring their authentic selves into the classroom to foster stronger relationships with students and create more inclusive and joyful learning environments. Reed’s career highlights include partnerships with major brands like Old Navy and 3M, demonstrating his broad appeal and impact.
