Ed Begley Jr.

Edward James Begley Jr. was born on September 16, 1949, in Los Angeles, California. The son of Oscar-winning actor Ed Begley, he was raised with an early exposure to the entertainment industry. He completed his education at Van Nuys High School in 1967 and later attended Los Angeles Valley College in North Hollywood. Begley Jr. began his acting career in 1967, quickly accumulating numerous roles across film and television. His early work included guest appearances in shows like “Room 222” and “Maude,” signaling the start of a long and diverse career.

His breakout role came as Dr. Victor Ehrlich in the television series “St. Elsewhere,” which ran from 1982 to 1988. This performance earned him six consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award nomination, establishing him as a recognized talent in the industry. Beyond television, Begley Jr. made significant contributions to cinema, appearing in films such as “Blue Collar” (1978), “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982), “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984), and “Pineapple Express” (2008). He is also known for his recurring roles in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries, including “Best in Show” (2000) and “A Mighty Wind” (2003).

Parallel to his acting pursuits, Begley Jr. developed a strong commitment to environmental activism, starting in 1970. He has consistently advocated for sustainable living, employing solar and wind power in his home, driving electric vehicles, and promoting veganism. He co-hosted the reality show “Living with Ed” (2007–2010) with his wife, Rachelle Carson, showcasing their eco-conscious lifestyle. His advocacy extends to authoring books like “Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life” (2008) and serving on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 2000 to 2016.
