About

Edward Parker Helms was born on January 24, 1974, in Atlanta, Georgia. His early life included open-heart surgery at age 13 for a congenital heart defect, an experience he has spoken about publicly. He attended Interlochen Center for the Arts and graduated from The Westminster Schools in 1992, subsequently earning a Bachelor of Arts in film theory and technology from Oberlin College in 1996. During his college years, Helms gained early experience through internships, including one with WNBC’s press and publicity department.

Helms began his career in New York City with sketch comedy groups and also worked as a trainee film editor. His comedic talents led him to voiceover work, which eventually connected him with a talent agent. His breakthrough arrived in April 2002 when he joined Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” as a correspondent, a role he maintained until mid-2006. On the show, he was known for his field reports and hosting segments like “Digital Watch” and “Ad Nauseam.” In 2006, Helms transitioned to a recurring role on NBC’s “The Office,” playing Andy Bernard, a character who became well-known for his Cornell and a cappella interests, eventually becoming a series regular in 2007 and featuring in the show’s opening credits by 2010. His work on “The Office” earned him six Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, with a win in 2008.

Beyond television, Helms achieved mainstream film success with the blockbuster “The Hangover” (2009) and its sequels in 2011 and 2013, where he portrayed Stuart “Stu” Price. He also took on lead roles in films such as “Cedar Rapids” (2011) and “Vacation” (2015). Helms expanded his work into voice acting for animated films, including “The Lorax” (2012), “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (2017), and “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (2021). In 2013, he founded his production company, Pacific Electric Picture Co., and co-created, wrote, and executive produced the Peacock sitcom “Rutherford Falls” (2021–2022). He also received a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Writing for a Comedy or Variety Special for “The Fake News with Ted Nelms” (2018).
