Edd China

Edd China established his reputation for innovative automotive design and engineering with his ‘Casual Lofa’ driving sofa. This unique creation garnered early recognition, driving at ‘Top Gear’ Live in 1998 at the Silverstone ‘Live Arena’ and featuring on Jeremy Clarkson’s DVD, The Most Outrageous Jeremy Clarkson Video In The World…. Ever! in 1998, as well as Channel 4’s ‘The Big Breakfast.’ China’s mechanical ingenuity earned him his first Guinness World Record in October 1998 for the Fastest furniture (140 km/h; 87 mph).

Earlier, he served as a special effects technician for ‘Father Ted’ in 1994, applying skills from his engineering product design degree from London South Bank University, where he initially developed the ‘Casual Lofa’. China’s television career expanded with guest appearances on ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ and as a resident designer on the BBC series ‘Panic Mechanics.’ In 2003, he began his fifteen-year tenure as co-presenter and lead mechanic on Discovery Channel’s highly successful ‘Wheeler Dealers’ alongside Mike Brewer, restoring classic cars until his departure in 2017. During this period, China also co-hosted the ‘Auto Trader’ television series in 2005 and presented ‘Classic Car Club’ for Discovery Channel. His inventive spirit continued, securing Guinness World Records for the Largest motorised shopping trolley, ‘Trolleyshoppus Rex,’ in November 2005; and the Fastest office, ‘Hot Desk,’ in November 2006.

Through his independent platforms, particularly ‘Edd China’s Workshop Diaries,’ he continues to connect with a dedicated fanbase, showcasing complex automotive restorations and groundbreaking inventions, solidifying his position as a respected authority in automotive repair and modification and enhancing his reputation as a visionary inventor.
