Edward John China, born on May 9, 1971, in London, England, developed an early interest in cars and mechanics. He pursued his passion by earning a degree in engineering product design from London South Bank University. During his university years, China embarked on his first significant project, creating the “Casual Lofa,” a driving sofa. This innovative creation not only showcased his mechanical ingenuity but also helped him raise funds for a Raleigh International expedition to Belize. His early work as a special effects technician for the comedy television program “Father Ted” in 1994 further honed his creative and practical skills.
China’s television career began to flourish in the late 1990s. He appeared on “Top Gear” Live in 1998, driving his Casual Lofa at the Silverstone ‘Live Arena’. The same year, the Casual Lofa was featured on Jeremy Clarkson’s DVD, and China showcased his creations on Channel 4’s “The Big Breakfast.” He served as a guest on “Scrapheap Challenge” and was a resident designer on the BBC series “Panic Mechanics.” From 2003 to 2017, China gained widespread recognition as the presenter and mechanic on Discovery Channel’s “Wheeler Dealers,” where he and co-presenter Mike Brewer meticulously restored classic cars. His work on the show highlighted his detailed repair processes and technical knowledge, making him a respected figure in the automotive world.
Following his departure from “Wheeler Dealers” in 2017 due to creative differences regarding the show’s direction, China continued to share his mechanical expertise through his independent ventures. He established Cummfy Banana Limited in 1999 for his unique vehicle creations and later founded Grease Junkie Limited in 2009. China has also maintained a strong online presence, launching “Edd China’s Garage Revival” in 2018 and “Edd China’s Workshop Diaries” in 2021 on his YouTube channel, where he continues to engage with fans and work on various projects. Beyond his television and business endeavors, China holds multiple Guinness World Records for creating the fastest toilet, bed, milk float, and the largest motorized shopping trolley, showcasing his inventive spirit and commitment to pushing mechanical boundaries.
