About

Born on May 17, 1959, in Charlotte, North Carolina, James William Nantz III developed an early interest in sports. He grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, Colts Neck Township, New Jersey, and Marlboro Township, New Jersey, where he attended Marlboro High School. During his high school years, he was co-captain of both the basketball team and the golf team, demonstrating a nascent talent for leadership and sports. He continued his education at the University of Houston, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television Broadcasting. During his time at university, Nantz played on the Cougars men’s golf team, rooming with future professional golfers Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister. His initial broadcasting experience came from transmitting taped interviews for CBS Radio Network’s ‘Sports Central USA’ reports.

Nantz began his professional career as an anchor and sportscaster for KHOU in Houston, Texas, in the early 1980s. He then moved to KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1982 to 1985, serving as a weekend sports anchor and calling BYU football and Utah Jazz games. In 1985, Nantz joined CBS Sports, where his career trajectory would solidify his status as one of sports broadcasting’s most recognizable voices. He initially worked as a studio host for college football and basketball coverage and as an on-course reporter for PGA Tour golf. His talent was quickly recognized, leading to significant roles in major sports telecasts.

A pivotal moment in Nantz’s career came in 1989 when he began anchoring CBS’s coverage of the Masters Tournament, a role he has held consistently since. Following Brent Musburger’s departure from CBS in 1990, Nantz became the lead play-by-play announcer for the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four, a position he maintained until 2023. In addition to golf and college basketball, Nantz has been the lead play-by-play announcer for CBS’s NFL coverage since 2004, calling numerous Super Bowls. His distinguished career is marked by consistency, a deep understanding of the sports he covers, and his signature opening line, ‘Hello, friends,’ which was inspired by his father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Nantz has received numerous awards, including multiple Sports Emmy Awards and NSMA National Sportscaster of the Year honors, solidifying his legacy in sports broadcasting.
