Midfielder Edward ‘Eddie’ Newton has made over 200 senior appearances in his football career – most notably for Chelsea FC who he played for from 1990 to 1991 under famous managers such as Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit. Newton was instrumental in his club reaching the semi-finals of both the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup and scored a winning goal in the 1997 FA Cup final to take victory over Middlesborough and cementing his status as a club legend. This was followed by a stellar year in 1998 with Chelsea winning both the Cup Winners Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the League Cup.
A knee injury put an end to his successful run on the pitch but still interested in coaching new talent, Newton started work with a London primary school before being appointed assistant manager at Milton Keynes Dons alongside eminent Italian manager Roberto Di Matteo and reaching the League One play-offs. Their successful partnership continued with a coaching placement at West Bromwich Albion before both returned to Newton’s original team Chelsea.
His success in steering Chelsea towards European success in 2012 and winning the FA Cup in 2011 led to him overseeing the players as technical coach on loan to Chelsea between 2016 and 2019. He remains at the club as assistant manager under Frank Lampard where he is considered a Blues stalwart.
