Emmitt Smith

Emmitt James Smith III was born on May 15, 1969, in Pensacola, Florida. He quickly established himself as a formidable talent in football from an early age, playing his first organized game at eight. As a high school athlete at Escambia High School, Smith achieved significant milestones, rushing for 106 touchdowns and 8,804 yards, ranking second in American high school football history at the time. His exceptional performance led Escambia to two state championships and earned him national high school player of the year honors in 1986 from publications such as USA Today and Parade Magazine. Despite some skepticism regarding his size for collegiate football, Smith continued his storied career at the University of Florida, where he set numerous school rushing records in just three seasons, including 1,599 rushing yards in a single season (1989) and 3,928 career rushing yards. He was a unanimous first-team All-American in 1989 and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Smith was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys as the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft. His professional career, primarily with the Cowboys, spanned 15 seasons and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. He became the NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards and holds the record for career rushing touchdowns with 164. During his tenure with the Cowboys, alongside quarterback Troy Aikman and wide receiver Michael Irvin, collectively known as “The Triplets,” Smith led the team to three Super Bowl championships (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX) in the 1990s. In 1993, he achieved a rare feat by winning the Super Bowl, NFL Most Valuable Player award, NFL rushing crown, and Super Bowl XXVIII MVP award all in the same season. He also led the NFL in rushing yards four times and rushing touchdowns three times. Smith retired with the Cowboys in 2005 after two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, leaving a legacy of durability, vision, and exceptional performance.

Post-football, Emmitt Smith has diversified his professional life into various business ventures and media roles. In 2002, he co-founded Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, a non-profit organization focused on providing resources for children’s potential. He has also ventured into real estate development, forming Smith/Cypress Partners LP with Roger Staubach and co-founding ESmith Legacy, which specializes in commercial real estate development and investment management. Smith has also been a studio analyst for NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” and ESPN’s “NFL pre-game coverage.” In 2006, he won the third season of “Dancing with the Stars,” further expanding his public profile. His continued involvement in business, media, and philanthropy underscores his impact beyond the football field.
