Fergal Devitt, known professionally as Finn Bálor, was born on July 25, 1981, in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. Before his wrestling career, he played association football and Gaelic football. He started his professional wrestling training at NWA UK Hammerlock, debuting on November 23, 2001. Early in his career, he founded NWA Ireland in 2002 with Paul Tracey, a promotion that trained future wrestling talents like Becky Lynch and Jordan Devlin. His foundational years saw him secure the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship twice, demonstrating his potential on the international circuit across Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In 2006, Devitt joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) under the ring name Prince Devitt, quickly establishing himself as a prominent junior heavyweight. He achieved considerable success, becoming a three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and a six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, partnering with Minoru and Ryusuke Taguchi. He also won the prestigious Best of the Super Juniors tournament twice, in 2010 and 2013, and was the original leader of the influential Bullet Club stable. His NJPW tenure also included a reign as NWA World Historic Middleweight Champion through CMLL’s working relationship.
Bálor signed with WWE in May 2014, joining its developmental brand, NXT, and adopting his current ring name. He made an immediate impact, winning the NXT Championship, holding it for 292 days, a record at the time. He also co-won the inaugural Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic with Samoa Joe in 2015. Transitioning to the main roster in July 2016, Bálor made history by becoming the first WWE Universal Champion at SummerSlam, a significant milestone achieved in his pay-per-view debut and within 27 days of his main roster arrival. Despite an injury that forced him to relinquish the title shortly after, he continued to achieve championships, including two Intercontinental Championships, one United States Championship, and four reigns as World Tag Team Champion, making him the 24th Grand Slam Champion in WWE history.
