About

Garret Lee Dillahunt was born in Castro Valley, California, on November 24, 1964. He grew up in Selah, Washington, as the middle child of three boys. Dillahunt pursued his education at the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1987. He later refined his craft at New York University’s Graduate Acting Program, receiving an Master of Fine Arts degree. Following his academic pursuits, Dillahunt dedicated several years to theatrical productions, performing both on and off Broadway and in various respected regional theater companies such as Steppenwolf and Seattle Repertory Theatre. This extensive stage background prepared him for a diverse career in visual media.

Dillahunt transitioned to film and television roles, where he gained recognition for his ability to embody a wide range of characters. A notable early career turning point was his dual role in the HBO series “Deadwood.” In 2004, he portrayed Jack McCall, and in 2005, he appeared as Francis Wolcott, demonstrating his flexible acting skills. This led to other significant television roles, including Steve Curtis in “ER” (2005-2006) and Matthew Ross in “The 4400.” He also took on multiple characters in “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” as Cromartie, John Henry, and George Laszlo (2008-2009).

His film career includes roles in critically acclaimed pictures such as “No Country for Old Men” (2007), for which he received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (2007), and “Winter’s Bone” (2010). From 2010 to 2014, Dillahunt starred as Burt Chance in the Fox comedy series “Raising Hope,” a role that earned him a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. More recently, he was a regular cast member in “Fear the Walking Dead” (2018-2021) as John Dorie, and has appeared in films like “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “Army of the Dead” (2021), and “Where the Crawdads Sing” (2022). He continues to work in both film and television, with upcoming projects including “Sarah’s Oil” (2025) and “Archangel” (2026).
