About

Gloria Rachel Allred, born on July 3, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, embarked on an impactful legal career driven by personal experiences and a commitment to justice. Before her legal pursuits, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with honors, and a Master of Arts from New York University. She taught in public schools for several years and was a lecturer at the University of Southern California, holding California life credentials in secondary school education and supervision. These early career experiences provided a foundational understanding of societal issues that would later shape her legal advocacy.

Allred co-founded the firm Allred, Maroko & Goldberg in January 1976, focusing on civil rights, sexual harassment, women’s rights, wrongful termination, and employment discrimination. Throughout her five-decade career, she has represented numerous clients in high-profile cases, often using media platforms to amplify her advocacy. Her notable achievements include successfully challenging the Friars Club of Beverly Hills’ male-only membership policy in 1987 and securing a significant settlement for actress Hunter Tylo in 1997, establishing important rights for pregnant actors. She also played a crucial role in a 2004 California Supreme Court decision affirming the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Her dedication has earned her various accolades, including induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2019 and the President’s Award from the National Association of Women Lawyers. She has been recognized by Time Magazine as “one of the nation’s most effective advocates of family rights and feminist causes.” In 2024, she was recognized among Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Civil Rights & Plaintiff Employment Lawyers, underscoring her enduring influence and commitment to combating injustice and securing rights for women and minorities.
