Greg Brockman

Gregory Brockman was born on November 29, 1987, in Thompson, North Dakota. He displayed an early aptitude for mathematics, chemistry, and computer science, attending Red River High School. His academic achievements include winning a silver medal in the 2006 International Chemistry Olympiad and becoming the first finalist from North Dakota in the Intel Science Talent Search since 1973. After briefly attending Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brockman departed from academia to pursue his career in technology.

In 2010, Brockman joined Stripe, Inc., a financial software services company, as one of its earliest employees. He played a pivotal role in the company’s growth, contributing to its expansion from 4 to 250 employees. In 2013, he was appointed as Stripe’s first Chief Technology Officer, a position he held until his departure in May 2015. His work at Stripe involved building foundational infrastructure and scaling the company’s technical operations.

Following his tenure at Stripe, Brockman co-founded OpenAI in December 2015 alongside Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, and others. Initially serving as CTO, he was instrumental in establishing the organization’s research direction and recruiting a team of AI experts. He led key projects such as OpenAI Gym, OpenAI Five (a Dota 2 bot), and the development of large language models like GPT-2 and GPT-4. Brockman has been a vocal advocate for the responsible development of AI, testifying at the first Senate hearing on AI in 2018 and being recognized on Time magazine’s TIME100 AI list in 2023. After a brief departure in November 2023, he returned to OpenAI and currently serves as its President, continuing his work on advanced AI systems.
