Gregory Daniel Davies was born on May 14, 1968, in St. Asaph, Flintshire, Wales. His parents, Bob and Pauline, were living in England but his father ensured he was born in Wales. He grew up in Wem, Shropshire, which he considers his home. Davies studied drama and English at Brunel University, graduating in 1990. Prior to his comedy career, he worked as a secondary school teacher for 13 years, teaching drama at Sandhurst Comprehensive School and Orleans Park School, where he was Head of Drama in 2002/03. He also taught English at Langleywood Secondary School.
Davies began his stand-up comedy career in 2005, performing on the independent club circuit. In 2007, he received three nominations at the Chortle Awards, including “Breakthrough Act” and winning “Best Sketch, Variety or Character Act” as part of the sketch team We Are Klang. His first solo stand-up show, “Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog,” was nominated for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2010. He subsequently toured this show, and his second stand-up show, “The Back of My Mum’s Head,” across the UK in 2013.
His television career commenced with an appearance in the children’s TV show “Dick & Dom in da Bungalow” in 2003, portraying a character named “Massive Greg.” He gained wider recognition for his role as the Head of Sixth Form, Mr. Gilbert, in “The Inbetweeners” (2008–2010) and its two spin-off films. From 2012 to 2019, he co-starred in the BBC Three sitcom “Cuckoo,” which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme in 2013. He also created, wrote, and starred in the Channel 4 sitcom “Man Down” (2013–2017). Since 2015, Davies has hosted the comedy panel game show “Taskmaster,” and in 2021, he began writing and starring in the BBC One series “The Cleaner.”
