Wendell Andre Carter Jr. was born on April 16, 1999, in Atlanta, Georgia. His athletic lineage is notable, with his father, Wendell Sr., having played professional basketball in the Dominican Republic, and his mother, Kylia Carter, having played at the University of Mississippi. Carter Jr. distinguished himself early in his academic and athletic career. While attending Pace Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, he maintained a 3.8 GPA and received the Lance and Shield Award as the school’s top scholar-athlete. During his high school tenure, he led Pace Academy to Georgia Class AA and 3A state championships, showcasing his skills with impressive averages of 22.7 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 5.8 blocks in his senior year. Nationally recognized, he was named the Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year in 2017 and was also a McDonald’s All-American.
Carter Jr. committed to Duke University for his collegiate career, despite considering institutions like Harvard. In his single season (2017-18) with the Duke Blue Devils, he started all 37 games, averaging 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.05 blocks per game. He was a Second Team All-ACC selection and a unanimous pick to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Following his freshman year, he declared for the 2018 NBA draft, where he was selected seventh overall by the Chicago Bulls. His professional journey began with the Bulls, where he demonstrated his capabilities on a larger stage, and he later joined the Orlando Magic in 2021 as part of a significant trade.
Since joining the Orlando Magic, Carter Jr. has continued to develop his game, balancing his professional responsibilities with community involvement. In the 2023-24 season, he played in 55 games, averaging 11.0 points and 6.9 rebounds. He signed a four-year, $50 million rookie scale extension with the Magic in October 2021, followed by a three-year, $58.7 million extension in October 2024. Off the court, Carter Jr. is recognized for his philanthropic efforts, having received the Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award in 2023. He actively participates in community events, including hosting basketball camps and working with mentoring programs, leveraging his platform to empower youth.
