Haylie McCleney was born on July 11, 1994, in Morris, Alabama. She participated in various sports from a young age, showcasing a strong competitive drive. During her high school career at Mortimer Jordan High School, she led her softball team to three state championships, earning first-team all-state honors each season. She set a single-season batting record of .692 during her senior year. McCleney also played club softball for the Gold Coast Hurricanes, achieving a fourth-place finish at the 2011 ASA Gold Nationals. She was recognized as the Birmingham News Female Athlete of the Year in her junior and senior years, demonstrating early athletic and academic success. She was also a member of the National Honors Society and involved in community programs like Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
McCleney attended the University of Alabama, playing college softball for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2013 to 2016. Throughout her collegiate career, she earned multiple accolades, including Second Team All-American in 2013 and three consecutive First Team All-American honors from 2014 to 2016. She was also recognized with First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team selections. McCleney holds the Alabama Crimson Tide batting average record at .447 and is part of an elite group with over 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. Following her college career, McCleney joined professional softball leagues, playing for the USSSA Pride in 2016, the Texas Charge in 2017, and Scrap Yard Fast Pitch from 2018 to 2020. Since 2013, she has been a member of the United States women’s national softball team.
Her international career highlights include winning a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where she led Team USA in batting average with .529. She also earned gold medals at the 2022 World Games and the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games, along with a silver medal at the 2024 Women’s Softball World Cup. McCleney was also named to the WBSC All-Olympic softball team. In 2020, she began playing in the Athletes Unlimited Softball league and now serves as a Partnership Sales Coordinator for the organization, transitioning her athletic experience into a professional business role. She announced her retirement from playing professional softball in July 2024.
