Holt McCallany

Holt McCallany was born Holt Quinn McAloney on September 3, 1963, in New York City, to theatrical parents. His mother, Julie Wilson, was a renowned cabaret singer and actress, and his father, Michael McAloney, was a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer. His early education included time in Dublin, Ireland, and later in New Jersey and Omaha, Nebraska. At 14, he ran away to Los Angeles with aspirations of acting, eventually working in a factory before his parents sent him to a boarding school in County Kildare, Ireland, Newbridge College. He later studied French at the Sorbonne, art at The Paris American Academy, and theater at L’École Marcel Marceau and L’École Jacques Lecoq in France. He also studied Shakespeare at Oxford University and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before moving to New York City to pursue his acting career.

McCallany began his professional acting career as an apprentice at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival. He then became an understudy in the Broadway production of “Biloxi Blues.” His film debut was in “Creepshow 2” (1987), followed by supporting roles in notable films like “Casualties of War” (1989), “Alien 3” (1992), “Jade” (1995), “Fight Club” (1999), and “Three Kings” (1999). He also appeared in the TV miniseries “Rough Riders” (1997) and played boxing trainer Teddy Atlas in the HBO telefilm “Tyson” (1995). His career continued through the 2000s with roles in “Men of Honor” (2000) and “Below” (2002).

From 2017 to 2019, McCallany gained significant recognition for his co-starring role as Bill Tench, an FBI agent investigating serial killers, in David Fincher’s Netflix series “Mindhunter.” Other notable television roles include a detective with psychological issues in “CSI: Miami” and a soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder in “Criminal Minds.” He starred as boxer Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary in the FX series “Lights Out” (2011). Recent film appearances include “Sully” (2016), “Shot Caller” (2017), “Wrath of Man” (2021), “Nightmare Alley” (2021), and “The Iron Claw” (2023). He is also involved in upcoming projects such as “Safe House” (2025), “The Amateur” (2025), and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (2025), and has taken on producing and directing roles for projects like “I, Redeemer” and “The Star Maker.”
