Huma Saleem Qureshi was born on July 28, 1986, in New Delhi, India. Her father, Saleem Qureshi, is a successful restaurateur, and her mother, Ameena Qureshi, is a homemaker. Huma Qureshi earned a Bachelor’s degree in History with Honours from Gargi College, University of Delhi. During her time in college, she was involved with the Act 1 theatre group, participating in various stage productions, where N. K. Sharma served as her mentor. Prior to her acting career, she also worked with several NGOs and assisted a documentary filmmaker. In 2008, she moved to Mumbai to pursue film roles and signed a two-year contract with Hindustan Unilever for television commercials. Her talent was noticed by director Anurag Kashyap during a Samsung Mobile commercial shoot, leading to a three-film deal with his company.
Qureshi made her Hindi film debut in 2012 with a significant supporting role in Anurag Kashyap’s two-part crime drama, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, which premiered at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. Her portrayal earned her nominations for Best Female Debut and Best Supporting Actress at the Filmfare Awards. She continued to garner critical acclaim for her performances in films such as ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ (2014), ‘Badlapur’ (2015), and the American film ‘Army of the Dead’ (2021). Her career also expanded into regional cinema with appearances in the Marathi film ‘Highway’ (2015) and the Malayalam film ‘White’ (2016), demonstrating her versatility. Throughout her career, Qureshi has received numerous awards and nominations, including a Filmfare OTT Award for her work in streaming series.
Her career further diversified with prominent roles in web series, including the dystopian drama ‘Leila’ (2019) and the critically praised crime drama ‘Maharani’ (2021–present), for which she won a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress. She made her Hollywood debut in Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ (2021) and continued her success with roles in films like ‘Bellbottom’ (2021), ‘Monica, O My Darling’ (2022), and ‘Tarla’ (2023), where she played the titular role in the biopic of chef Tarla Dalal. In addition to acting, Qureshi has also entered production and served as a judge on the reality show ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’. Her commitment to diverse projects and strong performances has solidified her position in the entertainment industry.
