Jay Novacek

Jay McKinley Novacek, born on October 24, 1962, in Martin, South Dakota, established himself as a versatile athlete early in his career. While attending Gothenburg High School in Nebraska, he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field, setting a state record in the pole vault. He continued his athletic pursuits at the University of Wyoming, initially playing as a split end before moving to tight end. Despite a run-oriented wishbone offense that limited passing opportunities, Novacek achieved significant recognition. In 1984, he recorded 33 receptions for 745 yards and 4 touchdowns, setting an NCAA single-season record for average yards per reception by a tight end with 22.6 yards. That same year, he was recognized as a consensus All-American and was named to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) first-team. Beyond football, Novacek was also a standout in track and field, winning the WAC decathlon championship and placing fourth in the NCAA championships, earning All-American honors. He competed in the 1984 Olympic trials as a decathlete, demonstrating his diverse athletic capabilities.

Novacek began his professional football career after being selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He initially played wide receiver and on special teams. After transitioning to tight end in 1986, his early years with the Cardinals were impacted by injuries and limited opportunities. However, his production increased when the franchise moved to Phoenix, notably recording 38 receptions for 569 yards and 4 touchdowns in 1988 despite not being the primary tight end starter. In 1990, he joined the Dallas Cowboys as a Plan B free agent, a move that significantly altered the trajectory of his career. With the Cowboys, Novacek became a central figure in the team’s offense, particularly on third downs where his ability to find open spaces against defenses was crucial. His tenure with the Cowboys led to five consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1991 to 1995, and he played a key role in the team’s three Super Bowl victories in 1992, 1993, and 1995. In 1992, he earned All-Pro honors, leading all tight ends with 68 receptions for 630 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.

His career with the Cowboys was marked by consistent performance in a potent offensive scheme. In 1995, he achieved his second-highest single-season totals in receptions (62) and touchdowns (5), alongside a career-high of 705 receiving yards, culminating in a Super Bowl XXX win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Novacek’s career was ultimately cut short by chronic lower-back problems, leading to his retirement from the NFL in July 1997. Over 11 seasons, he accumulated 422 receptions for 4,630 yards and 30 touchdowns. His post-season statistics include 62 receptions, 645 receiving yards, and 6 touchdown receptions, ranking him third in franchise playoff history in these categories. In recognition of his college achievements, Novacek was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and the inaugural University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1993. He was also inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2014.
